For Giovanni’s proposal to Emily, we spent several weeks planning everything together before proposal day ever arrived. After talking through different location options and the overall experience he wanted to create, we landed on Washington National Cathedral, and it ended up being the perfect fit.

The Most Meaningful Moments Usually Happen After the Proposal
One thing we’ve noticed after photographing proposals over the years is that the proposal itself is only part of the story. Once the nerves settle and the excitement starts to sink in, that’s often when couples are finally able to slow down and take in what just happened.
After Emily said yes, Giovanni wanted a few quiet moments together before we started portraits. We gave them space to enjoy that time without immediately stepping in, while still documenting the reactions and emotions. Those few minutes ended up becoming some of our favorite images from the entire afternoon. The excitement was still fresh. They couldn’t stop smiling. Every few seconds one of them would look at the ring, then back at each other, almost as if they were making sure the moment was actually real. We never want to interrupt that too quickly, because those first few minutes are usually when everything finally lands.
Then Giovanni pulled out a letter he had written for Emily. The two of them sat together and read it side by side, and it quickly became one of the most memorable parts of the entire proposal. As she read his words, Emily became visibly emotional. There were tears, laughter, long hugs, and quiet moments where they seemed to forget anyone else was around.
As a Washington DC engagement photographer, that’s usually our cue to take a step back a little. Not every moment needs direction, especially after a proposal.
