We photograph here often, and if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that a little planning makes a big difference. The Tidal Basin gets busy, DC parking can get crazy, and sunrise is painfully early depending on the time of year. But when everything is planned ahead of time? You get to show up, look cute, and actually enjoy the morning together.
This is also why we don’t expect you to figure everything out before reaching out to us. We handle a lot of the planning beforehand. From choosing the best start time and talking through outfits to parking, permits, and deciding whether it makes sense to add another location. We’ll make sure you know where you’re going and what the plan is before session day. So you’re not trying to figure out all of the logistics yourself the night before.
We want the whole experience to feel easy. We’ll pay attention to the crowds, the light, the timing, and all the little logistics happening in the background. You can just show up knowing we already have a plan for your Jefferson Memorial engagement photos!

One of the first things we usually talk about when planning Jefferson Memorial Engagement Photos is timing. Yes, sunrise comes up right away! When we say sunrise, we don’t necessarily mean pulling into the parking lot at the exact moment your phone says the sun comes up. We know getting dressed up before most people have even made coffee isn’t exactly appealing. We won’t pretend otherwise. But once you get there and see how much quieter everything is, the early alarm usually feels a little more worth it.
Sunset is still an option if mornings are absolutely not happening for you. The light later in the day can be really pretty here. Especially when it warms up the white marble and reflects around the Tidal Basin. We’ll just go into it knowing there are likely going to be more people around.
Crowds don’t automatically mean you’re going to have strangers in every photo. We’re used to photographing in busy parts of DC! So we’ll work with different angles, move around when we need to, and wait a minute for people to pass when it makes sense. You don’t need to be watching everyone around you or worrying that someone just walked into the background. That’s something we’re already paying attention to.
When we’re planning your session, we’ll talk through both options with you. We’ll figure out what makes the most sense for the photos you want and how you actually want the morning or evening to feel. But if those wide, clean photos around the columns are high on your list, we’ll probably be trying to convince you that sunrise is worth the early morning alarm!
The Best Spots for Jefferson Memorial Engagement Photos
We love Jefferson Memorial engagement photos because we can get a surprising amount of variety without making you walk all over DC in your nice clothes!
Of course, we’ll spend time around the steps and columns. That’s the classic Jefferson Memorial look, and the scale of the architecture makes those wider photos really beautiful. But we’re definitely not going to stand in the same spot for your entire session. We’ll move around the columns and use some of the quieter corners. Plus, we’ll change our angles depending on where the light looks best and where the crowds happen to be that morning.
The marble is also a huge part of why this location photographs so well. There are pale surfaces everywhere, so on a softer morning, the light reflects off the marble and bounces around us really nicely. It gives us a lot more freedom to move without constantly dealing with one side of your face being in bright sun and the other in heavy shadow.
If you wake up to clouds? Don’t panic! Overcast skies can actually be really nice here. The softer light works beautifully with all that white marble. Plus, we can move around the memorial without having to plan every photo around direct sunlight. Cloudy does not automatically mean bad photos, we promise!
Once we’ve gotten what we want around the memorial itself, we’ll usually make our way toward the Tidal Basin. This is where your Washington, DC engagement photos start to feel a little different. Instead of columns and marble in every frame, we can bring in the water, trees, walking paths, and views toward the Washington Monument. It’s a nice way to add some more relaxed photos without needing to drive somewhere else.
We also don’t follow the exact same route with every couple. The light might be different. One area might be packed with people. There could be construction or an event happening nearby. Sometimes we’ll find a quieter corner that’s working really well that morning and stay there a little longer. Everyone is different!
That’s part of our job. You don’t need to arrive knowing which column has the best light or where we should go next. We’ll keep an eye on what’s happening around us. Plus, we’ll adjust as we go so you can focus on each other instead of scouting the memorial with us.

How Much Time Do You Actually Need?
You don’t need to spend your entire engagement session at the Jefferson Memorial to get plenty of variety. Around 45–60 minutes usually gives us enough time to photograph next to the columns and steps. Then we’ll move around without feeling like we’re racing from one spot to the next!
Where we start adding more time is when you want a second location or an outfit change. DC has a funny way of making two places that look very close on a map take much longer to get between than expected. There’s walking back to the car, changing shoes or outfits, finding parking again, and, of course, DC traffic.
That’s why we’ll talk through all of this with you beforehand. If you want two locations, we’ll make sure they actually make sense together! Instead of packing so much into the session that you spend half of it getting from one place to another!
We’d much rather have enough time to enjoy your engagement photos, move around when something catches our eye, and let you settle into the session than watch the clock because we tried to fit four different ideas into one evening.
What Should You Wear at the Jefferson Memorial?
The Jefferson Memorial is one of those locations where you can dress things up a little without feeling overdressed. With the white marble, tall columns, and clean architecture, dresses, suits, and more structured outfits all look really good here. You definitely don’t have to stick with neutrals. Creams, blacks, browns, and softer colors work beautifully. But the memorial is already such a neutral backdrop that you can bring in color without it competing with everything around you.
We also pay a lot of attention to how your outfits move. If you’re wearing a dress, something with a little movement gives us more to work with while you’re walking around. Whatever you choose, make sure you can actually move comfortably in it. We’ll have you walking, sitting, turning, and interacting with each other, so this isn’t the day for an outfit you have to readjust every thirty seconds.
Now, the shoes deserve their own conversation! There can be quite a bit of walking involved with Jefferson Memorial engagement photos. Especially once we add in parking and the Tidal Basin! If you want to wear heels, absolutely wear them, but bring comfortable shoes for getting from place to place. You can swap once we’re ready to photograph and save your feet for the part where they’re actually going to be in the pictures.

What Season Is Best for Jefferson Memorial Engagement Photos?
There really isn’t a bad season for Jefferson Memorial engagement photos. The better question is what you want your photos to look like, and what kind of weather you’re willing to deal with to get them.
Spring gets a lot of attention because of the cherry blossoms, and for good reason! They’re beautiful around the Tidal Basin, but they’re also very popular. If cherry blossoms are high on your list, we’ll want to be a little more flexible with dates since peak bloom changes every year. We’ll be extra intentional about timing because this is easily one of the busiest times around the memorial!
Summer gives us plenty of greenery and longer days, but it also gives us DC heat and humidity. If you’re someone whose hair starts reacting to humidity before you’ve even stepped outside, we’ll consider that when choosing a start time.
Fall is a really nice middle ground. Temperatures start cooling down, there’s more color around the Tidal Basin, and it looks especially beautiful against all of the white marble. Winter can be beautiful too, especially if you like a cleaner, quieter look and don’t mind throwing a coat on between photos.
We also check what’s actually happening around the memorial before your session. Construction, events, temporary closures, and changes around the Tidal Basin can affect where we’re able to photograph. That’s not something we want you discovering when you show up. You can choose the season you love, and we’ll figure out the practical side of making it work.
Let’s Talk About Crowds
The Jefferson Memorial is one of the most popular spots in DC. So yes, there will probably be other people around. We’d rather tell you that upfront than promise you’ll show up and magically have the entire place to yourselves.
That said, crowds are something we’re very used to working around. We’ll plan your Jefferson Memorial engagement photos at a time that gives us the best chance of having more space. Sunrise and weekdays are usually our friends here, but even then, we can’t control who else decides to visit that morning!
What we can control is how we photograph around it. We’re constantly watching what’s happening in the background, changing our angle when we need to, using the columns to our advantage, or waiting an extra thirty seconds for a group to walk through. Sometimes the memorial can feel pretty busy while we’re there, and you’d never know it from the final photos!
So you don’t need to keep looking over your shoulder wondering whether someone is in the shot. You definitely don’t need to feel like your session is going badly just because a tour group showed up at the same time! We’ll keep an eye on the people around us and adjust as we go. You two can focus on each other, we’ll deal with everyone else.
Parking + Walking at the Jefferson Memorial
Parking is probably not the most exciting part of planning your Jefferson Memorial engagement photos. But it’s definitely something worth thinking about before the morning of your session!
There is parking around the Tidal Basin, but spaces can be limited! So we definitely don’t recommend planning to pull up five minutes before your session and hoping a spot magically appears.
We’ll talk through arrival time with you beforehand and make sure there’s enough time built in for parking and walking to the memorial. If sunrise is the plan, we want you walking up feeling ready to start. Not texting us from the car because you’ve driven around the Tidal Basin three times looking for somewhere to park.
Depending on the day, rideshare or public transportation might make more sense too. We’ll look at the rest of your session, where we’re starting, and whether we’re adding another location before recommending what will be easiest.
We’ll help you figure out the logistics ahead of time so parking and walking are just part of the plan. Not something you’re scrambling to figure out while your session is supposed to be starting!
Do You Need a Permit for Jefferson Memorial Engagement Photos?
Permit rules are one of those things that can always change. So we always check what’s current rather than assuming the information from a session we photographed a year or two ago still applies.

What Location Pairs Well With the Jefferson Memorial?
If you want two locations for your engagement session, we usually recommend choosing somewhere that gives you a noticeably different look. The Jefferson Memorial already gives us plenty of white marble, columns, and classic DC architecture. So there’s no real reason to leave just to photograph you in front of, well, more white marble and columns.
Old Georgetown is one of our favorite pairings because it changes things up completely. You go from the clean, more formal look of the Jefferson Memorial to brick sidewalks, historic streets, row homes, and photos that can feel a little more casual. It also gives us more opportunities to walk around and let the city be part of the photos instead of staying in one architectural space.
If you want to keep things a little more polished and editorial, the National Gallery of Art is another option we love! It still feels very DC, but the architecture and overall setting are different enough that your gallery doesn’t feel like we photographed the same background twice.
If the thought of getting back in the car, dealing with parking again, and adding another stop sounds like more than you want to do, you absolutely don’t need a second location. The Tidal Basin gives us a completely different look within walking distance. We can go from the columns and marble to water, trees, walking paths, and views of the Washington Monument without adding another round of DC logistics.
When we’re planning your Washington, DC engagement photos, we’ll talk through what you want your gallery to look like and how much moving around you actually want to do. We’d rather choose two locations that make sense together. Or stay in one area and use it really well, rather than add a second stop just for the sake of saying we did two locations!
You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose
This is probably one of the biggest things couples worry about before their session: What if we’re awkward in front of the camera
First of all, almost everyone tells us this. We’ll give you more direction when we’re working with the architecture and creating those clean editorial portraits. Then loosen things up as we move toward the Tidal Basin. You don’t need to arrive knowing how to pose, where to put your hands, or how to casually walk toward each other without laughing about how weird it feels.That’s our job! You two just need to show up!
If it takes you a few minutes to get comfortable, that’s completely normal. Most of our couples aren’t used to having a camera pointed at them. We definitely don’t expect you to suddenly know what to do just because you booked engagement photos!
Our job is to pay attention to what feels natural for the two of you and adjust our direction from there. Some couples need a little more guidance, while others warm up quickly and barely need us to say anything after a while. Either way works!
By the time you arrive, we’ve already worked through the timing, location, crowds, and all the other logistics beforehand. Once we start photographing, you really only need to focus on being together. We’ll guide you through everything else so you never feel like you’re just awkwardly standing there.
