We met before sunrise at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, wandered through the U.S. Capitol grounds as the city slowly came to life, and finished outside the Library of Congress. Each location brought its own character to the morning, but what stands out most when we look back isn’t just the architecture or the scenery. It’s how comfortable they felt together, how naturally the morning unfolded, and how every intentional decision leading up to the session gave them the freedom to simply enjoy being in the moment.

Couples often tell us after their session that they hadn’t realized how much of the experience happens before the camera ever comes out. For John and Esther, the planning started weeks in advance. To make the most of the quiet streets and soft sunrise light, we started photographing at 5:30 that morning, which meant our team was up and getting ready around 3:30 a.m. It was an early morning, but starting before the city got busy gave us a completely different experience. The Jefferson Memorial, the Capitol grounds, and the Library of Congress all felt calm. Giving us the space to move through each location without feeling rushed or working around large crowds.

The evening before John and Esther’s engagement session, Esther reached out because the dress she had been so excited to wear still hadn’t arrived. She wondered if we should postpone and wait until everything came together the way she had originally imagined. It was a completely understandable concern.
After spending time choosing an outfit you love, it’s easy to feel like one unexpected change is going to affect the entire session. Instead of making a quick decision, we talked through everything together. We weighed the options, thought about the light, the locations, and the experience they had been looking forward to. While ultimately deciding to move forward with the morning we had already planned. Looking back, we’re so glad we did!
When they received their gallery, the conversation wasn’t about the dress anymore. It was about how much they loved the way the morning had been captured and how true the photographs felt to them. That’s something we remind couples of often. It is very easy to spiral over one detail before a session. The dress. The weather. The shoes. The one thing that did not arrive on time. Completely normal. But the gallery is almost never about that one detail.
At the same time, this session was a good reminder that one outfit doesn’t define the final gallery. The way the morning comes together, the locations you choose, and the connection you share all play a much bigger role in creating photographs that feel timeless. When those pieces are intentionally planned, it’s much easier to look back at your gallery and remember the experience as a whole. Not the small details that felt so important the day before.
Blending Editorial Portraits with the Moments in Between
Before the session, John and Esther shared that they were drawn to photographs with a more editorial feel. That became the foundation for how we planned the morning. As we moved through each location, we gave plenty of direction when it was needed. We refined small details, adjusted their positioning, and took our time with certain compositions to create the clean, intentional portraits they had envisioned. Rather than rushing from one photo to the next, we focused on creating images that felt thoughtful and true to their style. At the same time, we never wanted the entire morning to feel like one long photoshoot.
While we were working on those editorial portraits, our second photographer, Ella, was paying attention to everything happening around them. The conversations between locations. The smiles after we wrapped up a pose. The moments where John and Esther relaxed, looked at each other, and forgot we were there. Those quieter moments bring a different kind of depth to a gallery.
When you see the finished collection, it doesn’t feel like a series of posed portraits. It feels like a morning that unfolded easily, with room for both intentional photographs and the interactions that happened along the way. One of the things that made John and Esther’s morning especially memorable was having our entire Lavish team there to document it. While we photographed the session, our videographer was alongside us creating their Save the Date film. A Few Tips for Planning Your Own Washington, DC Engagement
After photographing many engagement sessions throughout the city, there are a few things we almost always recommend.
Schedule your engagement session around your makeup trial.
If you’ve already booked your wedding makeup artist, try scheduling your engagement session for the same day. It’s a great way to see how your makeup photographs while making the most of an appointment you already have planned.
Order your outfit earlier than you think you need to.
When it comes to outfits, give yourself more time than you think you’ll need. Esther’s experience was a good reminder that shipping delays can happen, and having a little extra time gives you room to explore other options if something doesn’t arrive or fit the way you expected.
Try everything on beforehand.
We also recommend trying everything on before session day. An outfit can look completely different once you’re wearing it, especially once you’re walking, sitting, or moving around throughout the session. If you’re deciding between a few options, don’t be afraid to order more than one. Seeing them in person often makes the decision much easier.
Small details like these may not seem significant while you’re planning, but they can make a big difference in how settled and confident you feel once your session begins. When you’re able to show up feeling comfortable, it’s much easier to focus on enjoying the experience together.
Best Time of Day for Washington, DC Engagement Photos
Choosing the right time of day can completely change both the look and feel of your Washington, DC engagement session. Early morning gave us softer light to work with, fewer crowds at each location, and made it much easier to move between locations without the usual traffic and parking challenges. Some of Washington DC’s most iconic locations feel entirely different before the city wakes up. Instead of navigating around large groups of visitors, we were able to move at a comfortable pace and make the most of each stop.
Choosing the Right DC Engagement Locations
One of the things we enjoy most about planning an engagement session is helping couples narrow down their location options. Washington DC has no shortage of beautiful places to photograph, but the best route isn’t always the one with the longest list of landmarks. It’s the one that fits the kind of experience you want to have together.
