One of the first questions couples ask us is, “Should we reschedule?” Our answer is usually, “Let’s wait and see.” After photographing engagement sessions all over Washington, DC, we’ve learned that a little rain or an overcast sky doesn’t automatically mean the session is ruined. In fact, some of our favorite galleries have come from days that looked less than ideal on the forecast.
This session at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and Old Georgetown is a great example. We didn’t change our plans, we simply worked with the weather. The softer light, quieter streets, and slower pace gave us a gallery that would have looked completely different on a bright, sunny afternoon. In fact, the white marble at the Jefferson Memorial actually photographs beautifully under cloud cover because you don’t get the harsh reflections that bright afternoon sun creates.
That’s why we always tell couples not to panic when they see rain in the forecast. Sometimes waiting it out is the best decision you can make. Sometimes a little unexpected weather ends up giving you a gallery that’s unlike any other.

Don’t Be Afraid of Rain During Your Washington DC Engagement Session
After photographing engagement sessions all over Washington, DC, we’ve actually come to appreciate cloudy days. While sunshine can be beautiful, it can also create harsh shadows, bright highlights, and plenty of squinting. Overcast skies give us soft, even light that photographs beautifully, especially around iconic locations like the Jefferson Memorial. Skin tones look natural, details stay crisp, and everything has a softer, cleaner look without us having to constantly work around harsh sunlight.
One thing we want to reassure you about is this: if you’re picturing yourselves spending the entire session dodging puddles, looking soaked, or wondering if you’ve just wasted your investment, that’s not how we approach rainy sessions!
If it’s pouring the entire time, we’ll talk through your options. But if we’re working with light rain or an on-and-off drizzle, we’ll usually keep the session as planned. We might shift the timeline a little, wait out a passing shower with a coffee break. Or duck under a covered walkway for a few minutes, or grab an umbrella and keep exploring. The weather doesn’t have to take over the session, we simply work around it.
Most couples are surprised by how quickly they stop thinking about the rain. Once we’re walking around, chatting, and taking photos, the forecast usually becomes the last thing on anyone’s mind.
The biggest thing we want you to know is that you don’t have to figure any of this out by yourself. We’ll keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your session. We’ll talk through your options and make an outline together. By the time your engagement session rolls around, you can stop refreshing the weather app and focus on enjoying the experience. We’ll take care of the rest!
What to Wear for a Rainy Engagement Session
If there’s a chance of rain on the day of your engagement session, a few small outfit choices can make a big difference. We always recommend wearing fabrics that move well and dry quickly. For example, cotton blends, lightweight knits, or flowy dresses, instead of anything that’s heavy or stiff. Layers are also a great idea, especially during spring and fall in Washington, DC. The weather can change throughout the evening. A light jacket, sweater, or trench coat not only keeps you comfortable but can also add a little variety to your photos.
When it comes to shoes, this is one time we’d skip the bright white sneakers. They tend to pick up dirt and splash marks pretty quickly if the sidewalks are wet. Instead, go with shoes you’re comfortable walking in that won’t leave you worrying about every puddle. Neutral boots, loafers, flats, or dress shoes are all great options depending on your outfit.
Umbrellas? They can absolutely be part of the session! If we think we’ll need one, we usually recommend bringing a simple umbrella in a neutral color like black, white, or clear. It keeps the focus on the two of you and blends naturally into the photos.
As for colors, rainy days tend to make rich, earthy tones and classic neutrals really stand out. Think olive green, navy, rust, camel, cream, charcoal, or soft blues. They photograph beautifully against Washington, DC’s architecture without competing with the scenery. The biggest thing is not stressing over every little detail. What We Do When Rain Is in the Forecast
One thing that surprises a lot of couples is how much planning happens before we ever show up with cameras in hand! If there’s rain in the forecast, we’re not crossing our fingers and hoping for the best. We’re already watching the weather, thinking through different options, and making a plan that gives us the best chance for a great session. Sometimes that means adjusting our start time. Other times, it means changing the order of locations or building in a little extra flexibility. Every session is different, and we’ll walk you through whatever makes the most sense.
Our goal is to take that mental load off your plate. You don’t need to spend the week leading up to your session constantly wondering whether we should cancel. We’ll keep an eye on everything, stay in touch, and let you know if we think any changes need to be made. More often than not, we’re able to make a few adjustments and keep the session right on track!
Once we meet up, we want you to stop thinking about the forecast altogether. Most couples tell us they’re a little nervous at the beginning of their engagement session, and that’s completely normal. Almost nobody shows up saying, “We’re great in front of a camera!” That’s where we come in.
We’ll guide you through the entire session without making anything feel overly posed or awkward. We’ll keep you moving, give you simple prompts, and chat as we walk from one spot to the next. Before long, you’ll be focused on each other instead of where to put your hands or whether it’s still drizzling. By the end of the session, our hope is that you’re walking away thinking less about the weather and more about how much fun you had together taking your rainy engagement photos.
Why We Love the Jefferson Memorial on an Overcast Day
The Thomas Jefferson Memorial is a favorite spot of ours for a Washington, DC engagement session, and if the forecast calls for clouds, we’re usually not disappointed!
Most people imagine this location with bright blue skies, but we’ve found that overcast days actually let the architecture shine. The white marble pops against the gray sky, the light is soft from every angle, and we don’t have to spend half the session chasing shade or asking you not to squint. It’s also a location that feels a little quieter when the weather isn’t picture-perfect. There are often fewer people around, which means we can slow down, explore different angles, and give you a little more space to be together without feeling like you’re in the middle of a crowd.
Outfit-wise, this location is pretty forgiving. Neutral colors, classic black, soft blues, olive greens, or warm earth tones all photograph beautifully against the marble. Nothing competes with the architecture, so you don’t have to overthink what you’re wearing.
More than anything, we love how simple this location feels. You don’t need dramatic weather or a colorful sunset to make it interesting. The Jefferson Memorial has enough character on its own. An overcast sky just lets all of those details stand out even more!
Georgetown Is Even Better After a Little Rain
After we wrapped up at the Jefferson Memorial, we wandered over to Old Georgetown. This is usually where people stop worrying about the weather altogether.
Georgetown already has so much personality. The historic buildings, brick sidewalks, little alleyways, coffee shops, window displays- something is interesting around just about every corner. Add a little rain, and suddenly the whole neighborhood feels different. The sidewalks start reflecting the storefronts, the brick looks richer, and everything has a little more texture.
Something we love about Georgetown is that it permits us to keep moving. Instead of standing in one spot taking the same photo over and over, we’re walking through the neighborhood together, turning corners to see what catches our eye, and making little detours when something looks interesting.
Sometimes that means borrowing an awning for a few minutes while a shower passes. Or sometimes it means sharing an umbrella as we head to the next block. It may even mean embracing the puddles because the reflections are just too good to pass up.
We’ll tell you where to stand when it matters and then quietly step back when the two of you settle into the moment, while leaving room for the unexpected. Some of our favorite images happen because we noticed great light around a corner or decided to wander one more block before calling it a day. You can’t really plan for those moments, and that’s part of what makes Georgetown such a special place for rainy engagement photos.
The Best Washington DC Locations for Rainy Engagement Photos
Not every location works well in the rain, which is why we’ll always take the forecast into account when planning your session. The goal isn’t to chase the rain, it’s to choose places that still look great and give us plenty of flexibility if the weather changes.
Other locations like the National Gallery of Art and the Library of Congress are some of our favorites because they offer a mix of open spaces and covered areas. If a light shower rolls through, we don’t have to call it quits. We can step under covered walkways, archways, or building entrances for a few minutes, then head right back out once it passes.
At the end of the day, we’re not choosing locations because they look good in the rain, we’re choosing locations that give us options. Having a flexible plan means you can spend less time worrying about the forecast and more time enjoying your rainy engagement session!
Some of Our Favorite Photos Are the Ones We Never Planned
Something we love most about photographing a Washington, DC engagement session is that you never really know what’s going to happen once we start walking around. Sure, we’ll have a strategy for where we’re going, but some of our favorite images happen in the in-between moments that nobody could’ve planned.
One thing we’ve noticed over the years is that rainy days have a funny way of helping people relax. Maybe it’s because everyone’s expectations shift a little. Or maybe it’s because you stop worrying about whether every little thing is going according to our schedule. Whatever the reason, couples usually end up leaning into the experience instead of thinking about the camera!
We’ll absolutely give you direction throughout the session. We aren’t the photographers who just tell you to “act natural” and hope for the best. We’ll keep you moving, give you prompts, and help you feel comfortable every step of the way. But we’re also paying attention to everything that happens in between. The conversations while we’re walking. The little glances and the jokes that make both of you laugh at the exact same time.
Those are usually the photos our couples end up loving the most, not because we planned them, but because they actually feel like a normal afternoon spent together instead of an hour standing in front of a camera.
Why We Rarely Recommend Rescheduling Because of Rain
At the end of the day, every engagement session is going to look a little different, and that’s one of the things we love about this job! Would this session have looked different if it had been sunny? Absolutely. But different doesn’t mean better. Instead of bright sunshine, we had soft, even light all evening. Instead of busy sidewalks, Georgetown felt a little quieter. The streets picked up reflections after the rain, the Jefferson Memorial stood out against the gray sky, and the whole session had a relaxed pace that just fit the day.
We never went into this session trying to make the rain the main event. It was just one piece of the experience, and we worked with it the same way we’d work with golden hour, fall colors, or a breezy afternoon.
That’s really how we approach every session. We aren’t chasing one specific look or hoping everything goes exactly according to our schedule. We’d much rather lean into what’s happening that day and create photos that actually feel like your experience. Looking back at this gallery, we couldn’t imagine it any other way. The weather didn’t take anything away from the session; it gave it its own personality!
When We Recommend Rescheduling
While we’re usually happy to work through light rain or an overcast forecast, there are a few situations where we’ll recommend moving your session. If there’s lightning, heavy thunderstorms, flooding, or strong winds that could make it unsafe to be outside, we’ll always put safety first. We’ll always keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your session! We’ll also talk through what’s happening and help you decide on the best option. The goal is never to push through unsafe weather, it’s to make sure you have a great experience and photos you’ll be excited about!

Sometimes it’s waiting out a quick thunderstorm. More often than not, it’s simply reminding you not to panic because the forecast usually isn’t as bad as you think.
By the time your session rolls around, our hope is that you’re feeling excited instead of stressed. Once we’re together, we’ll lead you through everything. You don’t need to know how to pose, where to stand, or what to do with your hands. We’ll keep you moving, give you prompts that feel natural, and probably spend a good chunk of the session chatting and laughing as we explore together.
If rain is expected, we’ll usually start watching radar several days before your session. Sometimes that means shifting the timeline by 30 minutes. Other times we’ll swap the order of locations or wait out a passing shower. The goal isn’t to pretend rain doesn’t exist, it’s to make thoughtful adjustments so the experience still feels relaxed.
